Position provides technical and analytical work in planning, designing, implementing, supporting, and monitoring complex departmental and enterprise database management systems for the business, research, and/or instructional functions of clients. Employee will oversee the migration of database structures from development and QA environments into the production environment, and monitor and manage all environments and report capacity and performance results to management. A strong knowledge of scripting, stored procedures, and query skills are required. Duties include client requirements gathering as well as evaluating hardware availability and software requirements. Additionally, employee will be involved in administration of the databases(s) that support the application code. Employee will either be involved in code, database administration, or a combination of both depending upon the size and complexity of the application portfolio of the entity being supported. Employee will interact with business and application development staff and should be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads design of databases for modules of larger projects, monitoring progress to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
Helps determine appropriate architecture, and other technical solutions, and makes relevant recommendations to the project manager or clients.
Works closely with project managers and other members of the development team to develop detailed specification documents with clear project deliverables and timelines.
Work with clients, project managers, and designers in migrations of applications and databases to new environments.
Communicates to the project manager with efficiency and accuracy any progress and/or delays.
Coordinates with Information Security Office on assessing the risk of the database environments and appropriate controls to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the information.
Tests applications to ensure performance and capacity plans meet expectations, including performing index tuning, query writing, and optimization.
Designs and develops application database structure, tables, entity relationships, and security privileges.
Ensures designs make efficient use of network and database resources.
Coordinates work with other team members for application development, administration, information security, and network administration to ensure that architecture, functionality, and design are consistent with all information technology strategies.
Researches and evaluates new technology, products, specialized hardware and tools to optimize development and functionality of websites and applications.
Applies experience with disaster recovery and data replication techniques to protect departmental information and systems in the event of disaster or data loss.
Performs other duties as assigned.
PRINCIPAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Planning and Organizing: Ability to organize and follow complex and/or detailed technical procedures and communicate those concepts to technical and business resources; ability to work independently and perform job with minimal supervision.
Project Management: Ability to manage multiple complex projects.
Technical Knowledge: Competent to work on most phases of database systems administration with a focus on (but not limited to) Microsoft SQL environment; knowledge of additional database environments a plus; working knowledge of Data Transformation Services (DTS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and BCP for Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) essential.
Additional IT Skills:
Familiar with Data Science Programming Languages such as Python/R.
Familiarity with Hadoop.
Expert in Microsoft office suite of products such as Excel/PowerPoint.
Strong familiarity with Visualization tools such as Tableau/QLIK.
Technical Solution Development: Ability to devise or modify databases to solve moderately complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations; knowledge of system development and/or maintenance technologies to support the infrastructure that assigned databases resides upon and maintains that infrastructure.
Technical Support: Knowledge of technical features to assist in problem determination and resolution.
Consultancy Skills: Ability to consult with clients and higher-level technicians and analysts to resolve technical problems and ensure client satisfaction; ability to interact with client to discuss alternative technical solutions.
Certification or degree in computer programming or database administration from a technical school or college plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required.
Additional programming or database administration experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for required education.
3 years experience with big data and Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Computer Science or Science preferred.
The hiring range for this position is $78,874 - $104,499 annually.
Standard computer department working environment with standing, walking, and lifting less than 50 pounds required.
A moderate amount of work performed at customer site.
