The Project Scientist works independently and in cooperation with the Principal Investigator to make significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in any academic discipline. The research projects assigned to the Project Scientist are developed under the direction of Julia Ljubimova, MD, PhD, Director of the Nanomedicine Research Center in the Department of Neurosurgery, and Keith L. Black, MD, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. Research efforts are currently funded by four (4) new, 5-year NIH/NCI and private foundation grants. The Project Scientist is an ongoing member of a research team to contribute high-level skills to specific research. The Project Scientist is not required to carry out independent research or to develop an independent research reputation and does not have academic teaching responsibilities. Ordinarily, the Project Scientist title will carry out research or creative programs as well as administration of day-to-day lab operations with supervision by a member of the Professorial Series.
Educational Requirements: Completed PhD or MD/PhD in biology. Demonstrated significant, original, and creative contributions to a research or creative program or project. Completion of postdoctoral appointment in area of specialization.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years as a post doctoral fellow. The candidate must have experience in cancer molecule biology/immunology, gene array/proteomics and experimental cancer preclinical model’s treatment. Experience in Western blot, PCR, quantitative real-time PCR, and sub-cloning, and/or experience in cutting-edge histology/imaging techniques including quantitative bright-field and fluorescence microscopy and confocal microscopy is required. Ability to handle and perform small animal surgical procedures. Ability to use stereotactic surgical equipment. Ensure protocols are adhered to and laboratory procedures are followed. Maintain and manage IACUC protocols. The position will include studying the molecular mechanisms/pathways of the nanodrugs therapeutic effects. The treatment further will be optimized for clinical efficacy to treat brain and breast cancers. Strong computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, PowerPoint). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent organization skills and very detail-oriented; learns new tasks quickly; self-motivated; works well independently with minimal supervision; works well with others, and able to multitask. Strong interpersonal skills for interaction with peers, patients, physicians, and other customers of the medical center.
Physical Demands: Position requires working with microscopes and computers for extended periods of time and the use of specialized laboratory equipment. Must be able to sit, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time. Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds.
