Berkeley Lab's Energy Technology Area (ETA) Division has an opening for a Marketing Communications Manager II. You will be responsible for leading the execution of communications and strategic outreach aimed at advancing and strengthening ETA's reputation as the most outward/market-facing Area, which is comprised of three research divisions at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab (LBL). This role is pivotal in shaping ETA's communication strategy and execution, but will also be influential on Lab-wide strategies that intersect with the growth and development of applied technologies and building viable industry partnerships.
What You Will Do:
Spearheading strategic outreach and targeted education and awareness building campaigns
Educate a broad range of internal and external audiences
Increasing awareness of the division's $110 million in research activity conducted over hundreds of projects
Develop partnerships and working collaboratively with Area and ETA's division management and staff, public affairs officials at the Laboratory, local, national, international levels, and the subcontracted communications and media assets within ETA
Create and maintaining a robust research information management system that can support high profile, fast-paced, strategic outreach communications campaigns and other related communication efforts
Design, manage and execute a comprehensive strategic communications plan and manage appropriate staff. Develop evaluation criteria for obtaining results and will regularly interact with the associate Lab Director for Energy Technologies and other senior Lab managers
Establish and manage EETD research information management infrastructure
Work closely with ET Area's PIs and/or division council, develop and implement internal procedures and policies to create and maintain a robust research information management infrastructure to support high profile communications and strategic campaign efforts
Public Affairs (PA) Coordination
What Is Required:
B.S, degree or higher in scientific field is highly preferred; Master of Arts/Science degree or higher in Computer Sciences, Communications or English is also highly desirable; or equivalent plus at least 8 years of relevant experience.
Proven track record of designing, developing and executing successful strategic awareness building campaigns.
Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and strong coalition-building mind-set.
Skills in analyzing situations and giving sound professional judgment on problems dealing with public opinion and media relations.
Experience in message development, audience identification and issues management.
Knowledge of research enterprises. Skills in deciphering technical research information and findings, placing them in context, and communicating them to the news media and a general audience.
Skills to work with researchers to understand their research at an appropriate level through a variety of forums, and to spot potential dissemination opportunities.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Experience in recognizing and developing news and feature stories and in communicating them effectively in appropriate styles for traditional (radio, television, print) social and digital media.
Extensive knowledge of and experience with journalistic formats, styles, standards, deadlines, techniques and audiences.
Experience establishing and maintaining good working relationships with print, wire, broadcast reporters and social media influencers. Skills to pursue and maintain personal media contacts on a regular basis, to be responsive to requests for information, and to effectively promote programs and market story ideas. Skills to plan and execute media events.
Experience communicating with diverse professional media colleagues.
Skills to promote/pitch news and feature stories to radio, television, print and social media outlets in diverse and ethnic news media environments, consistent with the audience served, in order to affect broader outreach and dissemination of information.
Extensive experience writing and editing at professional journalistic level. Exemplary writing skills, including skills to use language accurately and creatively, to recognize and use AP style, correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Experience editing and proofing copy.
Work effectively and collaboratively within a research environment.
Skill in organizing tasks and meeting deadlines. Skills to work effectively under stringent deadline requirements by producing clearly written, accurate and organized materials in short periods of time.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Master's Degree or advanced degree in communications, energy/energy-efficiency/environment/sustainability/technology-oriented or closely related fields.
Ability to be a self-starter who is intellectually curious, excited about creating.
Experience in energy/energy-efficiency/environment/sustainability/technology-oriented journalism or appropriate research environments that have resulted in significant exposure to a variety of business topics.
Skills to be results-oriented, possess an entrepreneurial style, and the capability of drawing on the expertise of a team of domain specialists across the ET Area, the Divisions, Groups and project teams within Berkeley Lab and across the DOE & UC complexes, and externally and leveraging those assets to gain the greatest possible exposure with respective audiences.
Experience writing/editing in business media or in public relations serving business media.
Experience with video production.
Experience working with or in research-based environments.
Respond quickly and juggle deadlines.
Ability to learn new software and web-based services quickly.
